Bakersville to Augusta - June 28, 2017
The area is home to several scenic routes. NC-226A, "The Diamondback", is literally in our back yard. One of the stepping off points is in Little Switzerland, NC and the same point of which we will step off to complete this portion of the first day. From there we will make a pit stop at Wheels Through Time. Wheels Through Time is a non-profit dedicated to preservation of the history of American transportation. From there we will travel a few short miles to Deals Gap, NC to ride the "Tail of the Dragon". Both sections are extremely curvy and provide gorgeous views of the Great Smoky Mountains.
Both of us grew up in the small town of Bakersville, NC. The mountains provided us with numerous opportunities for adventure and we certainly took advantage of that. There was always an adventure to be had no matter where we went. We were never short on creativity or imagination and it occasionally led to a certain degree trouble. Though we would find ourselves in trouble from time to time, the area was always good to us and always welcomed us home!
Being from North Carolina, and especially from where we are, there isn't a great deal of fame that goes along with being from the area. We do have minor claims to fame that many might not consider grand, but does lend a hand in putting us on the map so to speak. In 1993, a Christmas tree from Mitchell County was chosen to be the National Christmas Tree which was placed in the Blue Room of the White House. Since 1966, North Carolina Christmas trees have decorated the White House 12 times, more than any other state. Additionally, each year, the Masters Golf Tournament held in Augusta, GA utilizes sand that comes from Mitchell County to fill the 44 bunkers on the illustrious course. The sand is comprised of mostly Quartz and was chosen specifically because the quality prevents a golf ball from burrowing deep into the traps.
It's rather befitting that our day ends in Augusta, GA!
Many of us love television, especially when it showcases a repair or restoration. Popular shows like "American Restoration" have captivated our attention by bringing focus to the innovations and inventions that have captivated our attentions for a better part of the last century. Wheels Through Time is located in Maggie Valley, NC amid the Great Smokey Mountains. Dale Walksler moved the collection of motorcycles to the museums current location from Illinois in 2002. The museum features over 350 motorcycles from 25 different manufacturers. Each of the exhibits in the museum works as designed, dubbing Wheels Through Time as "The museum that runs".
No matter what season Bakersville is in, the scenery is always spectacular. Lush green adorn the trees and Rhododendron during the Spring and Summer and lends to a fresh sweet scent in the air. In Fall, the leaves begin to express a welcome charm that only the Fall can bring. The warmth of summer begins to fade and the fresh smell is replaced with the scent of home cooking and a warm hearth. Though the leaves of Fall gradually disappear and cold begins to settle in, there is no shortage of warmth and beauty, even in the blustery winter months.
